Modeling the Impact of Thermal Management on Electric Vehicle Energy Consumption and Range

Electric vehicle (EV) energy consumption is strongly impacted by the energy used to maintain cabin, motor, and battery temperatures. Join us as we present an approach for predicting EV energy consumption based on environmental conditions where a TAIThermTM model of the vehicle and its occupants is combined with a thermal-electrical model of the battery pack and a 0D EV energy consumption model.
Our TAIThermTM 3D heat transfer solver, Human Thermal extension, and thermal-electrical battery model will be used to calculate the energy needed to maintain occupant comfort and motor and battery temperatures within their optimal ranges, while the 0D model calculates the energy consumption of the motor for a specific drive cycle. We will use our process automation software CoThermTM to couple the individual models and automate the simulation runs. We will apply this approach to a city drive cycle of a representative EV in three different environments and compare the impacts of thermal management.
